7 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows
Windows don’t fail overnight. They wear out gradually, and most homeowners only notice when the heating bill jumps or a draught becomes impossible to ignore. Knowing the signs that your windows need replacing helps you act before small problems turn into damp, damage and wasted energy. Here are seven to look out for, plus what you can fix without new windows.
1. You can feel draughts even when the windows are shut
Hold the back of your hand near the edges of a closed window on a windy day. If you feel cold air, the seals, gaskets or the frame itself may have failed. Sometimes an adjustment or new gaskets will fix it. But if the frame is warped or the draughts come from several places, replacement is usually the better long-term answer.
2. Condensation or mist between the panes
Condensation on the inside of the glass on a cold morning is often a ventilation issue. Mist or water droplets between the two panes is different. It means the seal on the sealed glass unit has failed, and the insulating gas has escaped. The good news is you may only need a new glass unit, not a whole window.
3. Your energy bills keep climbing
If your heating costs are rising faster than energy prices alone would explain, old windows could be part of the problem. Single glazing, early double glazing and failed units all let heat escape. Rooms that never quite warm up, or cool down quickly when the heating goes off, are another clue.
4.Windows are hard to open, close or lock
Stiff handles, sashes that stick, or locks that won’t engage are more than an annoyance. They’re a security risk and, in an emergency, a safety risk. Often a new hinge, handle or locking mechanism will solve it. But if the frame has dropped, bowed or twisted, the window will keep causing problems.
5. Visible damage, rot or discolouration
With uPVC windows look for cracks, yellowing, brittleness or corners where the welds have split. Damaged frames let in water and weaken the whole window.
6. Damp, mould or water ingress
Water stains on the walls around your windows, damp plaster or black mould in the reveals are warning signs. They may point to failed seals, blocked drainage or poor original fitting. In East Lothians wet, windy climate, driving rain quickly finds any weakness. Leaving it can damage plaster, timber and your health.
7. Too much outside noise
If traffic, buses or late-night street noise sounds like it’s in the room, your windows aren’t
doing their job. Modern double glazing, especially with acoustic laminated glass, makes a
noticeable difference, particularly on busy roads.
Bonus sign: they’re simply old
Most uPVC windows last 20 to 35 years, and the sealed units within them 15 to 25 years. If your windows were fitted in the 1990s or earlier, they’re likely well below today’s energy standards even if they look fine.
The benefits of acting sooner
Replacing tired windows before they fail completely has real advantages:
- Lower bills: Modern A-rated windows keep far more heat inside.
- A warmer, quieter home: Fewer draughts and less noise.
- Better security: Modern multi-point locks and internally beaded glass.
- Less damp: Better seals and trickle vents help control condensation.
- Improved EPC and kerb appeal: Both help if you plan to sell.
Timing matters too. Autumn is the busiest season for installers, as homeowners rush to
beat the cold. Booking a survey early gives you more choice of dates. Read new windows
before winter.
